Ross Community Garden
Established in 2013, the garden supports users with a range of physical and mental health challenges. It also hosts school visits throughout the year, engaging children on how their food is grown, conservation, and on the benefits of healthy eating. More recently the garden has expanded its offering, and now includes a Zero Waste Stall, a Talk Community Hub, Growing and Cooking Clubs and exercise classes. Run by Tim Shelley with support from over 70 volunteers, it is a hive of activity throughout the year, and in 2022 was awarded B&Q Community Garden of the Year.
At the garden, people can have their own raised bed which they can cultivate with advice from expert staff and volunteers. There are peaceful spaces to spend time relaxing, as well as community facilities including a pizza oven and fully equipped catering kitchen.
We are proud of our achievements. In Ross-on-Wye Community Garden, in 2023:
- 894 schoolchildren visited
- Around 40 adults each month with a learning disability or mental health needs were provided with a total of 1700 hours of support,
- We provided surplus food to anyone in need through the Zero Waste Stall which had over 11,000 visits,
- We ran a free pre-loved school uniform stall four times throughout the year,
- We ran cooking courses in our new kitchen, particularly supporting people who lack confidence in the kitchen or need help with planning meals and budgeting,
- Through the Talk Community Hub, we offered help, support and signposting to services,
- These activities were only possible through 81 local residents involved in volunteering.
