For Children and Young People

For children and young people

Allowing children and young people to connect with nature and horticulture, raising awareness about food and healthy eating, and educating about the importance of wildlife is at the heart of our work. We offer different sessions, each giving our young visitors a chance to get their hands dirty. All children are welcome!

Our garden in Ross offers raised beds for children to grow, tend and harvest fruit and vegetables, an orchard, several polytunnels (including one to keep us dry on very wet days), a great big compost area, a sensory herbal garden, living willow structures as a great hideaway, lots of space for wildlife such as a little pond and several insect hotels, a wild meadow, some mature native trees, and… plenty of space to explore and be.

Our gardening activities are educational as well as supporting mental health and well-being. The garden offers activities to help…

  • The development of fine motor skills through garden-based activities like planting, handling tools, digging
  • Sensory development – using the senses of sight, touch, smell and hearing
  • Social development – working together, talking about the garden, learning teamwork and sharing
  • Environmental awareness – learning about zero waste, zero food miles, organic gardening and wildlife protection
  • Development of self-confidence and improved emotional well-being
  • Encouraging healthy eating – showing children where food comes from and developing a sense of pride in ‘growing their own’
  • And, for visiting families, spending quality time together.

School visits

We currently work with 13 schools and three pre-schools, hosting visits to around 900 local children each year. All school sessions are free.  The school visits run each Tuesday morning and afternoon during term time.

Please take a look at the different school sessions we offer here and let us know which one you would prefer for your group. Please email kris.ehmer@haygrove.co.uk to book your visit.

Duke of Edinburgh's Award

We are pleased to welcome Duke of Edinburgh volunteers into the garden. We meet monthly on a Saturday morning to work on the grounds. The tasks vary from shifting compost, clearing garden beds, pulling brambles, harvesting willow, preparing activities for our visitors, help during special events – whatever is needed to support the Community Garden. We will also find time to get creative in a craft project, get to know each other and form friendships. New groups start in the Autumn term. Please email kris.ehmer@haygrove.co.uk for more information.

Holiday events

During the school holidays we offer seasonal events for children, young people and their families, which will be announced here and on our Facebook page.
